I want to say up front that this was not a sponsored stay. I have since worked with the company because I love them so much, but my original trip to the Getaway House Los Angeles was 100% paid for by myself and a friend.
Pro tip for check-in: Many of the Getaway House locations have shoddy cell service at best, so I highly recommend downloading offline maps before you approach the campground so you can easily navigate to your getaway without a hitch.
After a long week, sometimes a short getaway is in order. However, deciding which destination to visit can be daunting when you only have a weekend to spend. To help you choose the right trip, U.S. News considered factors like accessibility, affordability and entertainment options, as well as reader votes, to determine which cities offer the best weekend getaways. Vote for your favorite destinations below to help guide us in determining next year's ranking.
Visitors can reach New York City by train, plane or automobile, so weekend getaways are a cinch. Plus, ample attractions both indoors (like museums and Broadway shows) and outdoors (like Central Park and the High Line) make unpredictable weather a nonissue. For a dose of history, take the ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Or, simply find your way to one of the vibrant neighborhoods, such as the trendy Tribeca or charming West Village, and take in the energy of the city.
You can't tackle all of the Big Easy's top sights in one weekend, but its diverse offerings make it easy to choose activities based on your interests. History buffs can visit The National WWII Museum, architecture enthusiasts can stroll by stately mansions on a walking tour of the Garden District and outdoorsy types can visit New Orleans City Park. No trip would be complete without eating beignets at Café Du Monde or Cafe Beignet and enjoying a night out in Louisiana's lively French Quarter, where you can bypass Bourbon Street and opt for iconic jazz music at Preservation Hall.
Few destinations can rival this Canadian city's idyllic natural landscape: Hiking, skiing, mountain biking, whale watching and boating are just a handful of the activities travelers can enjoy on a weekend getaway. Get a dose of the great outdoors in Stanley Park or on the sands of Kitsilano Beach before grabbing a bite to eat at the Granville Island Public Market. For trendy shopping and nightlife, swing by the Yaletown neighborhood, which boasts a variety of watering holes, including casual pubs and sophisticated cocktail bars.
Kick off this amazing weekend with a welcome reception featuring an array of rare, back vintage wines from our library, hosted by our entire Winemaking and Executive teams, including Head Winemaker John Olney, Senior VP of Vineyard Operations David Gates, Monte Bello Winemaker Trester Goetting, Lytton Springs Winemaker Shauna Rosenblum, and CEO Mark Vernon.
This elegant five-course dinner will be hosted by John Olney, David Gates, Trester Goetting, Shauna Roseblum and Mark Vernon. Each course will be paired specifically with our wines as the chef and our team work together to craft an unforgettable wine and food experience. The wines featured for this dinner will all be from our library and will be specifically chosen based on them being in their optimal drinking window. We have not yet chosen the wines for this dinner but to give you an idea of what to expect, the wines for the last Weekend Getaway Winemaker Dinner were the 1991 Monte Bello (1.5L), the 2003 Geyserville (1.5L), the 2007 Geyserville Essence, the 2015 Monte Bello Chardonnay, and the 2020 Adelaida Grenache Blanc.
Nashville, Tennessee, is all about fun. Live music, street art, rooftop bars, and some of the best food anywhere combine to make a Nashville weekend getaway one of the best trips you can take. There is never a shortage of things to do any hour of the day, and a quick trip here will leave you dreaming about how soon you can come back.
Little St. Simons Island, Georgia: Little St. Simons Island is the perfect family getaway for anyone who loves nature, but hates camping. The food here can compete with the best Atlanta restaurants, and there is always a cooler of adult beverages chilling on the porch.
FDR State Park - Horseback riding at FDR State Park was a highlight for one of our family adventures. FDR is close to Callaway Gardens too, which offers lots of family fun. The weirdly fabulous Pine Mountain Animal Safari is also nearby. This is where a giraffe tried to lick my then-toddler with his HUUUGGEE tongue leaving us all crying with laughter.
Panola Mountain State Park: Panola Mountain State Park could also be classified under "unusual weekend getaways in Georgia" because you can sleep in a the trees here! Literally sleep in a hammock up in the canopy of the trees. I'm not sure I'm up for that adventure all night, although I did try it for an afternoon. My son and I really enjoyed the archery lessons here. If you stay for the weekend, take a side trip to the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, and the monastic heritage center.
There aren't many beaches near Atlanta, unless you count Calypso Bay at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor. If you're looking for a real beach though, Georgia's got some of those too -- and they make for excellent weekend getaways.
Downtown Atlanta: If museums and attractions are your idea of a great weekend, then you'll want to stay in Downtown Atlanta. The Omni CNN Center is the perfect location for a weekend of fun visiting the Georgia Aquarium, The World of Coca-Cola, The Children's Museum of Atlanta, and Centennial Olympic Park. For the truly adventurous, book a swim with the whale sharks package at the Aquarium.
Columbus, Ga.: To say I was surprised by all Columbus, Georgia has to offer is an understatement. I was absolutely blown away. My boys and I had such a fabulous time here that we're still talking about our rafting adventure with Whitewater Express and our dinner at 11th and Bay is still at the top of our list of favorites. Leave some time for the National Infantry Museum -- which, bonus -- is free!
Barnsley Resort: Take I-75 north toward Chattanooga and you'll find Barnsley Resort in Adairsville. This resort has it all -- beautiful accommodations, great dining, a spa, and lots of outdoor adventure. You'll find horseback riding, clay shooting, fly fishing, canoeing and kayaking, and so much more. After all that outdoor recreation, you must visit their spa to relax and unwind. It's a great romantic weekend getaway, only an hour north of Atlanta.
Brasstown Valley Resort. Nestled in the North Georgia Mountains, this resort redefines the typical mountain getaway. You'll find the beauty and natural splendor of idyllic Blue Ridge Mountain rentals without compromising the myriad amenities of a mountain golf resort and spa. Lodging and dining, championship golf, stables, a full-service spa, and a wide range of outdoor activities for the whole family are waiting for you.
Fortunately, the location of our fine city affords easy access to many other exciting, yet more relaxed destinations. These weekend getaways from NYC offer fun, relaxation and a little something different not too far from home.
Stay here: Mohonk Mountain House, set in the Shawangunk Ridge on Lake Mohonk, is sporting and sophisticated, a sort of East Coast version of The Shining grounds (without all the killing and stuff). Whether you choose one of the classic, wood-paneled rooms and suites or one of its private cottages two miles away, your nightly rate gets you access to a range of complimentary activities like boating and swimming, not to mention meals in its dining room.
San Marcos is about a 10 minute drive from Carlsbad where there are a ton of activities you can add onto your weekend getaway. In Spring, the Flower Fields are so pretty. Summer and fall are great times to visit some of the prettiest Southern California beaches. HOTEL: Lakehouse Hotel and Resort (8.4) or Park Hyatt Aviara (9.1)
Stop by the Botanical Building and Lily Pond for stunning photo ops. If you can tear yourself away from watching the cute ducks (we saw a duck with a row of babies when we visited!), go inside the historic lath building to see the plants. 2ff7e9595c
